📄 T4A Slip: Statement of Pension, Retirement, Annuity and Other Income

The T4A slip is an official Canadian tax information slip issued by a payer (institution, employer, trustee, plan administrator etc.) that reports various types of income you received in a calendar year. It helps you accurately report income on your federal tax return.

💡 What a T4A Reports

A T4A can show amounts that aren’t salary/wages (those go on a T4 slip), including:

  • 📜 Pension or superannuation income (box 016)
  • 💼 Fees for services/self‑employed commissions (box 048 and others)
  • 📚 Scholarships, fellowships, bursaries and artist grants (box 105)
  • 🏥 RESP educational assistance or accumulated income (boxes 040, 042)
  • 📈 Annuities and lump‑sum payments (boxes 024, 018)
  • 🧑‍⚕️ Certain benefits including COVID‑19‑related amounts when applicable (boxes 200‑204, 211)
  • 💰 Income tax deducted (box 022) — shows tax withheld that you can claim on your tax return.

🗂️ Where to Report on Your Return

When filing your Canadian income tax return, amounts from your T4A slip must be entered on the appropriate lines:

  • 📌 Pension, superannuation → Line 11500 of return.
  • 📌 Self‑employment/fees for services → Lines 13500–14300.
  • 📌 RESP payments → Line 13000, and possibly Form T1172.
  • 📌 Scholarships and bursaries → Line 13010.
  • 📌 Tax deducted (box 022) → Line 43700.

If you’re unsure where to enter a specific box amount, CRA guides and certified tax software help map box numbers to return lines.

📆 When You Should Receive It

Payers must issue your T4A slip on or before the last day of February following the tax year it applies to. You may get it by mail or see it in your CRA My Account online if you’re registered.

📌 Corrections & Issues

If information on your T4A has an error (wrong amounts, dates, payer details), contact the issuer promptly. The CRA may issue an amended or cancelled slip if adjustments are needed.

🔗 Extra Tips

  • 🔍 Always reconcile all T4As with your tax return — missing a slip can lead to reassessments or owing tax.
  • 📥 You can retrieve older T4A slips online via CRA services if you lost the paper copy.
  • 🧾 For amounts from non‑residents or specific situations, different slips (like T4A‑NR, RL‑1 in Quebec) may apply.
