Change Your Address with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)

If you move or need to update your address on file with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), you should notify the CRA as soon as possible. Updating your address ensures you receive correspondence, tax refunds, notices, and benefit payments without interruption. Official source: Canada.ca – Change Your Address.

Why You Should Update Your Address

Letting the CRA know about your new address helps validate your identity when you call and ensures that important notices, benefit information, and tax correspondence are mailed to the correct location.

Ways to Change Your Address

The CRA offers several methods to update your address:

  • Online via CRA My Account – The fastest method. Sign in to your CRA account, go to your Profile, then Contact information, and select Edit to update your address. Changes take effect immediately.
  • By Phone – Call CRA’s Individual tax enquiries line at 1-800-959-8281 (within Canada). Have your Social Insurance Number (SIN), full name, date of birth, and new address ready for identity verification.
  • By Mail – Complete and sign Form RC325 (Address and Telephone Number Change Request) and mail it to the address shown on the form. Processing may take 4–6 weeks after receipt.
  • On Your Tax Return – Include your updated address on your paper return or through EFILE. (Note: If you use NETFILE, address updates may not be accepted that way.)

Changing Someone Else’s Address

To update the address of another person (such as a spouse), you must be their legal representative and have the proper authorization (e.g., use CRA representative authorization).

Processing Times and Tips

Online updates are immediate. Phone updates also take effect quickly when verified. Mail updates may take 4–6 weeks or longer depending on workload. Make address changes well before tax filing deadlines or benefit disbursements to avoid delays.

Important Considerations

Updating your CRA address does not automatically update your information with other government departments or services (e.g., Service Canada for CPP/OAS or provincial services). You must update those separately.
