General Income Tax and Benefit Package
The General Income Tax and Benefit Package is the official set of forms, schedules and guides you need if you choose to file a paper income tax and benefit return (T1) with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). It includes federal and provincial/territorial forms based on where you lived on December 31 of the tax year.
How to Get Your Tax Package
- Choose the package for the province or territory where you resided at the end of the tax year.
- You can download it directly or order by mail if you prefer a printed version.
- CRA no longer automatically mails tax packages to all taxpayers — you may need to print your own.
What’s Included
The package typically includes the main return form, basic schedules and a guide to help complete your return. Depending on your situation (e.g., self-employment, capital gains, credits), you may need additional forms and schedules.
Additional Forms and Schedules
Some forms and schedules may not be included in the default package and must be downloaded separately. Examples often include:
- Schedule 3 – Capital Gains (if required)
- Schedules for credits like Canada Workers Benefit, tuition, home renovation credits, etc.
Special Filing Situations
You might need a specific package if:
- You were a newcomer to Canada during the tax year — use the package for where you resided on December 31.
- You emigrated during the year — choose your package based on residency at departure.
- You lived outside Canada but maintained significant residential ties — additional residency forms may be required.
- Filing for someone who died during the year.
Formats Available
Tax packages, forms and publications are available in multiple formats, including digital audio (MP3), electronic text, braille and large print.
Filing Tips
- If you choose digital filing, certified tax software can automatically populate parts of your return using CRA data (“Auto-fill my return”).
- Keep a copy of all forms, slips and receipts in case CRA requests supporting documentation.
- Consider registering for CRA’s online services (My Account) to track your return status, benefits and payments.
