📑 CRA Form T1043 – Deduction for Excess Registered Pension Plan Transfers
Form T1043 is an official tax form issued by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). It is used to calculate a deduction when a taxpayer withdraws an excess transfer amount from a registered retirement plan such as an RRSP, PRPP, SPP or RRIF.
This form helps individuals determine the portion of the withdrawn amount that can be claimed as a deduction on their Canadian income tax return. The form is typically used when an amount transferred from a Registered Pension Plan (RPP) exceeds the tax-deferred transfer limit and must be included in income.
📌 When Form T1043 Is Required
You may need to complete Form T1043 if:
- You transferred a lump-sum amount from a registered pension plan (RPP) to another registered retirement plan.
- The transferred amount exceeded the allowable tax-deferred transfer limit.
- You withdrew the excess amount from your RRSP, PRPP, SPP or RRIF.
- The withdrawn amount was included in your taxable income.
The calculated deduction can then be claimed on your Canadian income tax return to prevent double taxation of the excess amount.
🧾 Related Retirement Plans
Form T1043 applies to withdrawals from several registered retirement savings programs used in Canada:
- RRSP – Registered Retirement Savings Plan
- RRIF – Registered Retirement Income Fund
- PRPP – Pooled Registered Pension Plan
- SPP – Specified Pension Plan
These plans allow Canadians to save for retirement with tax-deferred growth, but certain transfers from pension plans can exceed permitted limits and require special reporting.
🧮 How the Deduction Works
If you withdraw an excess transfer amount from a retirement plan and report it as income, the deduction calculated using Form T1043 may be claimed on line 23200 (Other deductions) of your Canadian income tax return.
The deduction is generally allowed only if:
- You did not previously deduct the amount as an RRSP contribution.
- You reported the withdrawn excess amount as taxable income for that year.
