📌 How to Apply for the Canada Child Benefit (CCB)
The Canada Child Benefit (CCB) is a tax-free monthly payment administered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to help eligible families with the cost of raising children under 18. When you apply for the CCB, you do not need a separate application for related provincial or territorial child benefit programs — the CRA determines eligibility for them automatically.
📅 When You Should Apply
You should apply for the CCB as soon as you or your spouse/common-law partner meet the eligibility criteria and any of the following happens:
- A child is born
- A child starts to live with you or returns after a period away
- You begin or change a shared custody arrangement
- You legally gain custody of a child
🧾 Gather Supporting Documents
You may need to submit additional documents depending on your situation, including:
- Proof of birth (e.g., birth certificate) for your child
- Proof of Canadian residency or citizenship/immigration status
- Proof that you are primarily responsible for the child’s care
💻 How You Can Apply
- 📱 Online via CRA My Account: Sign in to your CRA account, go to “Benefits and credits,” add child information, review and submit.
- 👶 Birth registration: Apply through your province’s Automated Benefits Application when registering your newborn’s birth; this may automatically send your CCB application to the CRA.
- 📫 Mail: Complete and mail Form RC66, Canada Child Benefits Application with any supporting documents to your tax centre.
📤 After You Apply
Once your application is received, the CRA processes it and issues a CCB notice telling you the amount you will receive. If documents are missing, the CRA may ask you to provide them before finalizing your application.
🧠 Tips for a Smooth Application
- ✔️ Keep your personal information (address, marital status) up to date with the CRA.
- ✔️ Make sure you and your spouse or common-law partner file your annual tax returns on time — eligibility is assessed each year.
- ✔️ Use direct deposit for faster benefit payments.
