🛂 Apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD)

A Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) allows Canadian permanent residents outside Canada to return by commercial transport when they do not have a valid PR card.

📌 What is a PRTD?

The Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) is a temporary counterfoil placed in your passport. It proves your permanent resident status and allows you to board a flight, bus, train, or boat to Canada.

You only need a PRTD if you are outside Canada and your PR card is expired, lost, stolen, or never received.

🧑‍⚖️ Who Can Apply

  • You are a Canadian permanent resident
  • You are currently outside Canada
  • You do not have a valid PR card
  • You meet the residency obligation (usually 730 days in the last 5 years)
  • You are not a Canadian citizen

📄 Required Documents

  • Valid passport or travel document
  • Proof of permanent resident status
  • Evidence of meeting residency obligation
  • Two photos meeting IRCC specifications
  • Receipt for the $50 processing fee
