A Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) allows Canadian permanent residents outside Canada to return by commercial transport when they do not have a valid PR card.
📌 What is a PRTD?
The Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) is a temporary counterfoil placed in your passport. It proves your permanent resident status and allows you to board a flight, bus, train, or boat to Canada.
You only need a PRTD if you are outside Canada and your PR card is expired, lost, stolen, or never received.
🧑⚖️ Who Can Apply
- You are a Canadian permanent resident
- You are currently outside Canada
- You do not have a valid PR card
- You meet the residency obligation (usually 730 days in the last 5 years)
- You are not a Canadian citizen
📄 Required Documents
- Valid passport or travel document
- Proof of permanent resident status
- Evidence of meeting residency obligation
- Two photos meeting IRCC specifications
- Receipt for the $50 processing fee
