🚨 Urgent Processing for a PR Card or PRTD (Canada)

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) allows applicants to request **urgent processing of a Permanent Resident (PR) card** or a **Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD)** in certain emergency situations. These provisions are designed to help permanent residents who must travel and cannot wait for the normal processing time.

📌 Who Is Eligible for Urgent Processing?

To be considered for urgent processing, you must show that you need your PR card or PRTD because of one of the following:

  • A job opportunity or work‑related travel;
  • Your own serious illness;
  • The serious illness or death of a family member;
  • Loss or theft of your PR card while outside Canada;
  • A crisis, emergency or vulnerable situation.

IRCC verifies these reasons and supporting documentation. Not all requests are granted, and even if eligible, there is no guarantee that the card will be issued in time.

✈️ When You Haven’t Applied Yet

If you are leaving Canada in less than three weeks and haven’t yet applied for a PR card, IRCC cannot issue a PR card in less than three weeks. Instead, you may apply for a **Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD)** if:

  • You are already outside Canada, and
  • Your flight back to Canada is within the next 5 days.

A PRTD allows you to re‑enter Canada in the absence of a valid PR card. Without either document, you can generally only return to Canada by land in a private vehicle.

📄 How to Apply Urgently

Whether you are applying for a PR card or a PRTD, you should:

  1. Prepare your application and include all required forms;
  2. Include proof of travel (e.g., itinerary, tickets);
  3. Provide a letter explaining your need for urgent processing;
  4. Attach proof of urgency (doctor’s note, death certificate, employer letter, etc.);
  5. If applicable, include English or French translations of documents.

When applying online, tick the “Yes, my request is urgent” box in the Permanent Residence Portal. If applying on paper, mark your envelope **“urgent”**.

📍 Processing and Expectations

IRCC reviews urgent requests alongside supporting documentation. If you fail to provide acceptable proof, or your situation doesn’t meet urgent criteria, your application will be processed under normal timelines.

Normal processing times for PR cards can be **a few weeks or longer**, and there is still a processing standard of **at least 3 weeks** even for urgent requests.

🔁 What if You Are Already Outside Canada?

You cannot apply for a PR card from outside Canada. However, you may still seek urgent processing of a **PRTD**, as noted above, if travel home is imminent and you lack a valid PR card.

📌 Tips for Success

  • Provide clear proof of travel plans and urgency;
  • Include comprehensive supporting documents with your initial application;
  • Keep copies of all documents and communications with IRCC;
  • Check your application status online regularly.

Keep in mind that even if your application is marked as urgent, IRCC cannot guarantee timely issuance. Always plan your travel considering the normal processing times and required documentation.
