Features of Canada’s New Passport

Canada has unveiled a redesigned Canadian passport with the latest security features and advanced design elements to protect travellers’ identity and make the document difficult to counterfeit. The new passport aligns with international aviation security standards and retains global acceptance as a trusted travel document.

🛡️ Enhanced Security Features

The redesigned passport incorporates multiple anti‑fraud and durability enhancements:

  • Laser‑engraved personal data page — personal information and photograph are etched into a durable polycarbonate data page rather than printed in ink.
  • Kinegram overlay — a colour‑shifting feature that appears to move when viewed from different angles, helping verify authenticity.
  • Embedded electronic chip in transparent window — visible chip and antenna for enhanced biometric security.
  • Multiple photo versions — layered photos on the personal data page improve fraud detection.
  • Temperature‑sensitive and colour‑shifting inks — elements like metallic foils in shapes such as a deer and snowflake exhibit variable colours under different lighting, supporting visual authentication.

🎨 Modern Design and Artwork

The passport’s interior pages feature new artwork that celebrates Canada’s natural beauty throughout the seasons. These designs are not only visually appealing but also serve as additional security elements that change under ultraviolet (UV) light to reveal hidden details.

📄 Durable Construction

The passport’s personal information page is now made of high‑strength polycarbonate material, which is more resistant to water damage and physical wear. This ensures both longevity and tamper resistance. The laser‑engraved data is more secure than traditional printed text.

🍁 Cover and Symbolism

The new passport cover design includes updated visual elements such as different colours of metallic foil maple leaves and a debossed maple leaf on the back, reflecting Canadian identity and making the document distinctive. The passport continues to carry the internationally recognised ePassport symbol.

🧠 Continued Global Recognition

Canada’s passport remains one of the most powerful travel documents in the world, allowing holders visa‑free or visa‑on‑arrival access to a large number of countries. The updated security features are designed to maintain this high level of acceptance while improving safety and resistance to counterfeiting.

📍 Important Notes

The rollout of the new passport began following the announcement in May 2023, but Canadians with current valid passports do not need to renew early solely to obtain the new design — existing passports remain valid until their expiry date.
