Guide 5256 – Applying for a Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa)

Official Canada.ca guide for paper application to get a visitor visa, transit visa, or super visa to enter Canada.

What Is a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV)?

A Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), also known as a visitor visa, is an official document placed in your passport showing that you have met the requirements to enter Canada for temporary purposes such as tourism, visiting family, business, or transit. You must obtain a TRV before travelling to Canada if required.

Who Should Use This Guide

This paper application guide is for people who must apply from outside Canada, including if:

  • you cannot apply online (e.g., disability or special travel documents);
  • you’re applying for a visitor visa, transit visa, or super visa; or
  • you need assistance with the paper process.

Most applicants are encouraged to apply online via the IRCC portal or secure account.

Requirements for a TRV

To qualify for a TRV, you must show that you:

  • will leave Canada at the end of your stay;
  • have enough funds to support yourself and family members for your stay;
  • aren’t planning to work or study without authorization;
  • have no serious criminal background or security risks;
  • meet health requirements (medical exam if needed).

Step 1: Gather Required Documents

Prepare all necessary documents before applying. Use the Document Checklist (IMM 5484) included in your application package. Additional local requirements may apply depending on your country.

Step 2: Complete the Application Form IMM 5257

Fill out the standard application form for a Temporary Resident Visa (IMM 5257). Include accurate personal details, passport information, travel plans, and purpose of visit.

Step 3: Pay Fees

  • Visitor visa processing fee (per person) – typically CAD $100;
  • Biometrics fee (per person) – typically CAD $85;
  • Family maximum fees may apply.

Fees are subject to change and are not refundable even if your application is refused.

Step 4: Submit Your Application

Submit your completed application and supporting documents by mail to the Visa Application Centre (VAC) serving your country or apply online where available. Provide biometrics at an authorized location when instructed.

After You Apply

Once received, IRCC reviews your application. You may be asked for an interview or additional documents. If approved, the visa is stamped into your passport. Approval does not guarantee entry — border officers make the final decision when you arrive in Canada.

Super Visa for Parents and Grandparents

The super visa allows multiple entries to Canada with stays of up to 5 years on each visit. Applicants must also submit a letter of invitation and proof that their host meets income requirements.
