ERP 2.0 On‑Board Unit (OBU) Installation — OneMotoring Singapore

📌 What Is the ERP 2.0 OBU?

The On‑Board Unit (OBU) is an electronic device that replaces the older in‑vehicle unit (IU) for Singapore’s next‑generation Electronic Road Pricing (ERP 2.0) system. It uses satellite‑based Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology to record road pricing and vehicle location information without the need for physical gantries. By the time ERP 2.0 is fully rolled out, all Singapore‑registered vehicles must have an OBU installed to travel on ERP‑managed roads.

🚗 Who Needs an OBU?

Every Singapore‑registered vehicle must install the OBU by the end of the nationwide installation exercise, except for certain exempt vehicles such as tractors, locomotives, construction equipment, restricted‑use vehicles, trailers and classic/vintage cars subject to usage restrictions.

📥 Free Installation and Booking

Eligible vehicle owners will receive a notification from the Land Transport Authority (LTA) inviting them to install the OBU free of charge by a specified deadline. However, you do not need to wait for this official letter — you may contact any authorised workshop certified by LTA to book your OBU installation earlier.

To check eligibility and find a list of authorised workshops, visit the official booking page.

🔧 Installation Process

During the workshop appointment:

  • The existing IU is removed and collected by the installer.
  • The OBU’s processing unit, antenna and touchscreen display (for cars and most vehicles) are fitted in suitable locations inside your vehicle.
  • No additional documents are required for the appointment.
  • If an External Battery Device (EBD) is needed (for example, Tesla cars), this will be installed at the same time.

📅 Timeline & Eligibility

Installation began in phases from November 2023, starting with fleet vehicles and motorcycles. New vehicles are now pre‑fitted with OBUs by vehicle distributors. Remaining existing vehicles are being progressively scheduled for installation, with the nationwide rollout expected to complete ahead of the full ERP 2.0 launch.

💡 Features of the New OBU

The OBU provides:

  • ERP and parking charge information and deductions.
  • Real‑time road and traffic updates (e.g., school zones, bus lanes).
  • Support for future services such as roadside electronic parking and distance‑based charging.

The touchscreen display is optional, though strongly encouraged, because it offers the full interface; motorists who choose not to install the display can access key OBU info via compatible smartphone apps.

📱 Smartphone Pairing & Apps

If you opt out of installing the touchscreen, you can still pair your OBU with a compatible mobile app via Bluetooth, such as LTA’s official ERP 2.0 app or third‑party apps, to view key information like ERP charges, card balance and alerts.

🔌 After Installation — What’s Next?

Once installed, your OBU remains functional on Singapore roads, and its number typically carries over from your old IU. You can view OBU details, manage settings or check transaction history through OneMotoring Digital Services (login required).

📌 Important Notes

  • Free OBU replacement and installation are only valid within the allocated installation period from LTA’s notification.
  • You may combine the OBU installation with routine vehicle servicing for convenience.
  • After the transition, vehicles without an OBU that enter ERP‑managed roads may face flat‑rate charges.
